CONSUMPTION CITY
There once was a man who wanted to create a world: so he began by creating houses, provinces,
valleys, rivers, tools, lovers, et., and at the end of his life, he noticed, that this patiently elaborated labyrinth was nothing than his own portrait.

HISTOIRE(S) Sao Paulo is a-historical. The exponential growth of the city in the last 40 years developped
nearly 70% of the megalopolis. The only history Sao Paulo knows, is growth. History get’s reduced to a style, which gets applied, consumed with every new building. At it’s peak in the seventies,the city grew by 29 inhabitants per hour and 300000 cars per year. Still today, about 440 towers per year are built. Over the last 150 years, Sao Paulo with its faith in progress developped a culture of growth, the culture of consumption.
CONSUMPTION CITY is an urban research on new urban processes and sociological phenomena in Sao Paulo. It is an analytical and at the same time journalistic thesis, based on data, statistics, maps, historical facts, images, short videos and interviews.
Linking crime,consumption and chaotic growth, the resulting documentary film is establishing a logical structure, on which the uncontrolled vertical transformation of Sao Paulo is based.
Introduced by the historical context of Sao Paulo, the film is divided in 12 chapters which create the image of the city as a whole. The final chapter is a systematic of maps creating a kind of urban machine.
The research was supported by the Goethe-Institute and the FAU/USP Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism in Sao Paulo. The documentary was shown in Sao Paulo at the Goethe- Institute and at the Film and Architecture Festival in Munich and there has been a small exhibition at the Goethe-Institute called ‘Postcards from Consumption City’ as well as an article in the magazine Stadtbauwelt 155 ‘Sao Paulo –Mexico City’.
